Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect that the road reopened around 1:30 p.m.

A downed power line started a brush fire next to Bemis Road in Pittsfield Township, causing the road to be closed temporarily Tuesday, Fire Department officials said.

Pittsfield Township Fire Chief Sean Gleason said just before 11:30 a.m. crews closed Bemis between Carpenter Road and Platt Road because of a downed primary power line. The downed line caused the grass in the area to catch fire at Bemis and Platt, Gleason said.

A Nixle alert at 1:38 p.m. said the road reopened.

There was another small fire in the brush off Bemis about a half-mile east of Platt, Gleason said.

Crews from DTE Energy were on scene and Gleason, said he expected the road to be open again by noon. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area until then.

It's a busy day for Pittsfield Township firefighters. Earlier on Tuesday, fire crews from Pittsfield, along with other area fire departments, helped extinguish a blaze at the Spice Tree Apartments. That incident has been deemed suspicious and is under investigation.
