A couple found dead in Saline Friday morning appear to have died from medical or accidental causes, Saline Det. Don Lupi said Monday, but police are continuing their investigation.

John Gunther, 66, and Jeanette Gunther, 72, were found dead in their home in the 2200 block of Chestnut Crescent by a family friend who helped out with chores around the house, Lupi said.

The couple’s dog was also dead in the home, Lupi said, apparently from lack of care.

“There doesn’t appear to have been any foul play,” Lupi said. “We’re working with the medical examiner’s office and it will take a couple of months for the answers to come out.”

Lupi said the last time someone was known to have seen the couple was Dec. 8. He said they had no family in the area.

Lupi said police checked the home for carbon monoxide but did not find elevated levels.

Police chose not to release further details about the investigation but said it was important to inform the public about the deaths and the fact that they have found no signs of foul play.
