Ann Arbor Public Schools welcomed back students, teachers and new A2 Tech High School Principal Tyrone Weeks on Tuesday. Weeks is a former teacher and administrator of the district.

Tyrone Weeks is no stranger to the Ann Arbor Public Schools or to working with the district’s under-achieving students.

Now, his experience in those areas will be put to use at the helm of Ann Arbor Technological High School, formerly Stone School.

Weeks, a Detroit native, was employed at AAPS from 2005 to 2011, when he left the district to take an assistant principal’s position at Plymouth High School in the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.

While at Ann Arbor, Weeks served as a history teacher at the Roberto Clemente Student Development Center and a transition coordinator at Pioneer High School. He also headed up Pioneer’s Rising Scholars program, which is offered to economically disadvantaged and underserved youth who show academic promise.

Prior to becoming a teacher, Weeks worked with struggling teens in the Washtenaw County Juvenile Court Division.

Weeks also was named interim assistant principal at Pioneer in 2010, when former head principal Michael White took leave to serve in Iraq in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Jerron Bryant, a teacher consultant at A2 Tech, led the alternative high school through the summer, after four-year A2 Tech principal Shelia Brown retired in June.

The salary for the principal’s position is $96,975 to $109,515. Brown made $109,515 at the time of her retirement. Weeks was hired at $98,675, the second level. Ann Arbor schools received 46 applications for the A2 Tech position.

Weeks has strong Eastern Michigan University connections. He obtained both his bachelor’s degree in secondary education and his master’s degree in educational leadership from the school. He also is a doctoral candidate at EMU.

Weeks applied for at least one other job in the past six months, at Saline High School. He was announced as one of three finalists for the SHS principal’s position in April. Saline Area Schools ended up hiring the former assistant superintendent of Milan Area Schools, Julie Helber, in May.

Ann Arbor district spokeswoman Liz Margolis said Weeks will work together with Bryant as the school year gets under way to provide a “smooth transition in leadership.”
