Girl Scout troop 40112 in Ann Arbor is working hard toward the Scouts' goal of service. To that end, 10-year-old scout Abby Warrick came up with the idea to make blankets for kids in New Jersey who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.
"They got really happy that I thought of the idea and they wanted to do it," Warrick said. "It's important to help people in need who don't have homes anymore."
Abby's mom, Margie Warrick, is one of the troop leaders and is working with a church in New Jersey, where she hopes to send the blankets.
The troop, whose members range in age from 9 to 11 from both Eberwhite and Bach elementary schools, began making the blankets last week and will complete them when they meet again on Jan. 22. The Scouts will write notes identifying themselves and include both a message and a self-addressed stamped envelope along with their blankets.
"The girls are working hard on these blankets and want something personal like getting letters back," said Margie Warwick.
Abby Warrick, who describes her blanket as having "little crayon marks that are all different colors," looks forward to communicating with the recipients of the blankets.
"A big part of scouting is helping people in need, and this is a good opportunity for the girls to reach out and gain the understanding of how valuable it is to serve others," said Margie Warrick.
