An Ann Arbor man in his early 20s was stabbed in the abdomen early Sunday in the 400 block of South First Street, police said.

At 3:50 a.m., the man was assaulted with a knife in front of the apartment building where he lived by an unknown suspect, also in his early 20s, Ann Arbor police Sgt. Mike Scherba said.

The suspect fled the scene. The victim walked to a gas station on South Main Street where someone called authorities, Scherba said.

The male victim was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital where he underwent surgery and is still being treated.

The circumstances leading up to the incident are not known, police said. They continue to investigate.
