A Milan firefighter took matters into his own hands when a fire broke out in an apartment in the complex where he lives Wednesday afternoon.
The Milan Area Fire Department was called to the Parkside Lane Apartments in the 100 block of Canfield Street at 2:52 p.m. for the fire. One of the firefighters, 26-year-old Sean Meyers, was already near the scene, however, said Fire Chief Robert Stevens. He happened to live in one of the apartments in the same complex.
Meyers received the same call as all the other firefighters and walked over to the apartment to assess the situation, Stevens said. The fire was contained to a one-bedroom apartment.
"The fire was in a mattress and some clothing," Stevens said. "He brought the fire under control with an extinguisher."
Meyers was not yet in any of his firefighting gear when he put out the fire. Stevens said firefighters use "common sense" in these types of situations.
Four people were displaced by the fire and received lodging aid from the Red Cross, according to a release. Stevens said two of the residents were a 16-year-old boy and his mother.
Two other residents at the apartment complex were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by Huron Valley Ambulance, but no one was transported to the hospital.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this point.
"We're investigating that with the Milan Police Department," Stevens said. "Nothing seems suspicious at this time. It appears to be accidental."
