• The local chapter of NANBPWC presents its annual dinner ball.
MONDAY
• This year's University of Michigan theme semester is the Understanding Race Project. As part of the theme semester, a number of events are taking place under the umbrella of an MLK Symposium, primarily on Monday. Among the highlights are speeches by Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center (Hill Auditorium, 10 a.m.) and activist/educator Angela Davis (Michigan Union, 2 p.m.) on Monday. • Among other highlights at U-M is the Michigan Community Scholars Program's Circle of Unity on the Diag from 3-4 p.m. The event will feature folk singer Josh White Jr., slam poets, a step show, and the traditional Anishinaabe group Miskwaasiniing Nagamojig: The Swamp Singers.
• Dr. Steve L. Robbins will speak at the U-M Business & Finance Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation at Rackham Auditorium, U-M. His theme is Imagine the Possibilities. What if ?
• Enjoy American Roots Music at the Ypsilanti District Library - Michigan Ave.
• The Mosaic Youth Theatre Of Detroit will present an MLK Day Concert at Ann Arbor District Library, Downtown (main) Branch.
• The U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance will put on a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration at the Power Center.
• There will be a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at the Ypsilanti District Library - Whittaker Road.
• Take in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads & MLK Day Event: Prof. Roy E Finkenbine: Searching for Jordan Anderson: A Personal Journey Into Race And Slavery In America at the Ann Arbor District Library, Downtown (main) Branch.
• Hear some of the city's musical royalty perform in From Cass Corridor to the World: A Tribute to Detroit’s Musical Golden Age at Hill Auditorium.
TUESDAY
• Zingerman's Roadhouse will hold The Jemima Code: Great Cooks Share Their Secrets with special guest Toni Tipton-Martin, who is also speaking as part of the Understanding Race Project.
• University of Michigan panel discussion: "Gay Rights: A Civil Rights Success Story?"
• Community Conversations are offered as part of the Understanding Race Project. January’s community conversation held at Sunward Cohousing is titled: Colorblind: How not seeing “color” actually hinders justice and equality. It will also be held Wednesday at the Washtenaw County Learning Resource Center.
• Learn about Race and Art: A Case Study from Winslow Homer at the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
