Three Ypsilanti residents were displaced from their apartment Friday afternoon after a grease fire scorched their kitchen and caused $3,000 in damage.
Ypsilanti Fire Department Capt. Dan Cain said firefighters responded at 4:32 p.m. to an apartment in the 700 block of Clark Road for a grease fire. Cain said the residents were heating up grease in a pan to do some cooking when the fire started.
The fire spread to other objects on the countertop and the cabinets, Cain said. A neighbor helped the tenants put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters cleaned up the scene and made sure the fire was out, Cain said.
Three people had to be treated for smoke inhalation by Huron Valley Ambulance at the scene of the fire, but no one was taken to the hospital. Three residents at the apartment were displaced for the time being, Cain said. It’s unknown how long they will be displaced.
