Times are tough for school districts across the state, but students at one Saline elementary school took matters into their own hands to ensure they would receive the best education possible.

Students were rewarded for their fundraising efforts with an opportunity to dunk their building principal, Betty Rosen-Leacher, and head custodian, Mike Puckett, in a dunk tank Thursday, the report said.

Saline Area Schools faced a structural deficit situation for the current school year, prior to its three employee unions agreeing to significant concessions. The district's fund balance remains a concern of the school board's.
The district projects to have just $1.5 million in its fund equity, or main savings account, by June 2013. The Board of Education has a policy that when the fund balance drops below 5 percent of the district’s operating expenses, a plan must be crafted for replenishing the savings account to at least 5 percent within two years. If the fund balance dips to $1.5 million as expected, that would be about 3 percent of Saline's $48.6 million budget.
