A 27-year-old Pittsfield Township man is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail on a $200,000 bond for allegedly abusing his 2-month-old boy, according to police.
Briton Morrison was arraigned on three counts of first-degree child abuse Thursday at the Washtenaw County Jail. He was arrested Wednesday following an interview with Pittsfield Township police, Deputy Chief Gordy Schick said.
Schick said the alleged abuse occurred at the man’s apartment in the 3100 block of Woodland Hills. The 2-month-old boy had to be hospitalized for “serious internal injuries,” Schick said. The nature of the abuse couldn’t be released due to the ongoing investigation but Schick said police believe Morrison intentionally injured the child.
“We do believe he knowingly and intentionally caused serious harm to the child,” Schick said.
If he’s convicted, Morrison faces a life sentence for each charge of first-degree child abuse. He will return to court for a preliminary exam at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 30 in the 14A-1 District Court in Pittsfield Township.
Schick said Child Protective Services reported the alleged abuse to police on Tuesday. There was only one date listed in the report, but Schick said the alleged abuse could have happened over a period of time.
Schick said he’s not aware of the current condition of the child.
Morrison is being represented by the Washtenaw County Public Defender's Office. A representative from the public defender's office declined comment on the case Friday.
