A fire in a garage at an Ypsilanti Township home caused approximately $15,000 in damage Tuesday afternoon, firefighters said.
Ypsilanti Township Fire Department Captain Dave Crescio said crews went at 1:06 p.m. Tuesday to a home on the 2000 block of Colony Way. Crescio said a neighbor and a passerby alerted firefighters to flames and smoke coming from the garage, which is attached to the home.
One person was home at the time of the blaze and safely escaped.
Flames and smoke still were coming from the garage when firefighters arrived on scene and the first unit to arrive put the blaze out. It took a little less than two hours for firefighters to clear the scene.
Crescio said $10,000 in damage was done to the garage itself and $5,000 in damage was done to the contents of the garage and home. The fire did not spread to the home, but parts of it did suffer some minor to moderate smoke damage.
No one was injured by the blaze and the residents will be able to stay in the home once the power is restored, Crescio said.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of Tuesday evening.
