A 34-year-old Ypsilanti Township man is expected to be criminally charged in connection with the early Sunday morning death of a 1-year-old boy, police said Tuesday.
Deputies from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 1100 block of Fall River Road in Ypsilanti Township at 12:30 a.m. Sunday after a 911 call that reported a young child was possibly choking, said Sgt. Geoff Fox.
Police confirmed the 34-year-old man, who lived in the residence, made the 911 call. There is no blood relation between the man and boy.
When authorities arrived, the child was not breathing, police said. CPR was administered by deputies until paramedics arrived and took the 1-year-old to St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after resuscitation attempts failed, Fox said.
"Further investigation revealed numerous suspicious facts about what happened on this night (that) has led to the arrest of a male subject ... in the home," Fox said.
At this point in the investigation, police could not release any more details due to the sensitive nature of the case. Police would also not yet elaborate on what criminal charges the man might face.
He is currently in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail and is expected to be charged Thursday. Once the man is arraigned, police will release his name and booking photo.
