An Ypsilanti Township apartment was destroyed Sunday after a blaze that firefighters said appears to have been intentionally set in Aspen Chase Apartments.
Ypsilanti Township Fire Department Captain Larry James said the fire began at about 5:46 p.m. after the 22-year-old resident had a confrontation with her case worker.
“Things weren’t working out,” James said. “She moved the couch in front of the door and set it on fire in hopes of no one being able to get in and get it out.”
The case worker and another individual from the complex were able to break out the windows and get the woman out of the apartment.
She was transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center and treated for smoke inhalation.
James said the fire caused $80,000 worth of damage to the structure and contents totaling $4,000 was lost.
“Fortunately it didn’t damage any other apartments,” he said. “It ould have been much worse.”
