A task force investigating the I-96 corridor shootings will provide a stepped-up law-enforcement presence along the freeway this Saturday, police announced at a news conference Thursday.
The presence is meant to reassure the thousands of motorists expected to travel along Interstate 96 to Michigan State University’s home football game against Nebraska, MLive reported. The extra patrols will run roughly from the Livingston County line to U.S. 127, Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth said at the press conference.
Police stress that the risk to motorists is low, especially since most of the shootings have not occurred on the freeway.
A total of 24 seemingly-random shootings have taken place since Oct. 16 near or on the highway in Oakland, Livingston, Ingham and Shaiwasee counties, leaving motorists and residents on edge. One person has been injured.
“As I said in the past, you're more likely to get in an accident on that corridor than you would get shot at," Wrigglesworth said.
At a news conference in Wixom Wednesday, police said they have received more than 2,000 tips in the case. The FBI, ATF and Crime Stoppers are offering a $102,000 reward in the case.
