The Milan Police Department has a new police chief.

Gerard Scherlinck, a 26-year veteran of the Troy Police Department, started on the job last month. He was offered the position on June 7 after a search that involved 42 applicants, the Milan News-Leader reported. He officially started work July 16.

Scherlinck isn't looking to make any major changes in the department. Instead, he said he will build off the strong foundation already in place.
