Michigan State Police said Saturday that the potential witness in the I-96 shootings investigation made contact with officers and they're no longer asking the public to help identify him.
The man - who remains publicly unidentified - was sought after task force investigators obtained his image from a Mobil gas station in Brighton. The photos were taken on Oct. 27, the day that two of the 24 freeway shootings took place.
According to a news release: "He was cooperative and assisted the task force with their investigation. As a result, the task force is no longer seeking information on the identity of this individual."
There have been 24 reported shootings on I-96 since Oct. 16, prompting public concern and a coordinated police response.
Meanwhile, police stepped up patrols on I-96 on Saturday, due to the Michigan State University football team's game against Nebraska in East Lansing. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
