Ellickson served as a crew chief on the B-17G "Flying Fortress" and has enjoyed a 26-year love affair with the plane as part of a lifelong affection for aviation. He served a tour in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 in Germany.
Ellickson is a founding member of the Yankee Air Force and was among about a dozen members who bought the Yankee Lady in 1986, followed by a 10-year restoration effort. That resulted in the plane returning to the air in 1995.
