Michael Hartman is charged with three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, four counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and one charge each of accosting a child for immoral purposes and aggravated indecent exposure. He was in court for a preliminary exam Tuesday morning, which was adjourned for a competency exam.

Hartman will return to court at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 15 for a competency hearing, court officials said.

Hartman was arraigned on the charges on Oct. 17 and is being held in the Washtenaw County Jail on $50,000 cash or surety bond, court records show.

Police said Hartman sexually abused a girl he knew throughout the summer months. He is accused of coercing the young girl into having sex with him on multiple occasions.

The girl was under 16 at the time of the alleged assaults, police said.

If convicted, Hartman faces a maximum punishment of life in prison.
