Sheriff's officials are investigating the circumstances of a traffic stop that resulted in a suicide attempt early Saturday morning.

After a vehicle was stopped for having a deliberately obscured license plate while in the area of Ecorse Road and Hayes Street, the driver ran to the 400 block of Woodlawn Avenue, police said.

After deputies approached the individual, the man pulled out a gun. Deputies then talked to him, according to a news release, but the person then shot himself.

The person was transported to St. Joseph hospital in Ypsilanti and currently is in intensive care.

The case still is under investigation and the Sherriff's office said there will be more information released once it becomes available.
