Broken glass cut the Ann Arbor firefighter's hand, and he was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital for treatment, Battalion Chief Robert Vogel said. The firefighter was still at the emergency room about 6 p.m. Vogel Said.
Firefighters rescued a dog suffering from smoke inhalation and gave it oxygen, Vogel said. The animal's condition appeared grave when it was first taken from the house.
"He couldn’t move. He just kind of laid there gasping for air," Vogel said. But after firefighters administered oxygen, the dog began barking, he said.
It was at least the second pet rescue by Ann Arbor firefighters in just over a week. Firefighters saved two dogs from a fire at an apartment house on Jan. 25.
Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire, which started in the kitchen in the 2300 block of Manchester Road. Although the blaze was contained to the rear of the home, there was smoke and water damage throughout, Vogel said.
No one was home when the fire broke about 3 p.m., but a resident arrived about the same time firefighters did, Vogel said.
The cause of the fire was still being investigated Saturday evening.
