Ypsilanti police arrested an 18-year-old woman Monday after she took out a knife during a fight and slashed a woman and, in the process, cut her own hand severely enough that she needed medical treatment.
Police went to the 500 block of Ballard Street at 8:36 p.m. Monday to investigate a report of a felonious assault. Detective Sgt. Thomas Eberts said two women were fighting after the suspect got in a dispute with the victim’s brother.Eberts said it’s not clear what started the issue between the suspect and the victim’s brother, but the victim got involved in the incident and a fistfight began. Eberts said the 18-year-old Ypsilanti woman produced a knife during the fight and chased after the woman.
Eberts said the victim was cut on the right thigh and suffered a small puncture wound on her chest, but the woman refused medical treatment. The suspect somehow managed to slash her own hand during the incident.
“She received medical attention and was released after treatment and then we lodged her at the jail,” Eberts said.
The woman is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, Eberts said. The report on the incident is not finished and the investigation continues.
