A homeless woman reported she was sexually assaulted outside a downtown Ann Arbor church early Saturday morning, police said.

The 49-year-old woman said she was at the First United Methodist Church, 220 S. State St., when she was awakened by a man shaking her between 12:30 and 3 a.m., Ann Arbor Police Lt. Renee Bush said. The woman said the man had one hand on her pants and the other under her shirt. She moved his hands and asked someone to call police, but said she wasn’t sure if anyone did.

The next day, she saw an officer at Liberty Plaza at the corner of Liberty Street and South Division Street and reported the assault to him.

The suspect is described as a black man about 45 years old. He is 5 feet 8 to 6 feet 2 inches tall with a short Afro hairstyle. He has a scraggly beard and was wearing camouflage pants, a tan shirt and athletic shoes, Bush said.

Bush said there were several witnesses to the assault. Police are investigating.
