Someone set a pile of wood and leaves on fire in the backyard of a home in Ypsilanti early Tuesday morning, police said.

Police and fire crews were dispatched at 3:58 a.m. Tuesday to the 100 block of Maple Street in Ypsilanti after receiving reports that a yard was on fire.

An unknown suspect set a stack of logs and fallen leaves on fire with lighter fluid, Ypsilanti police said in a news release.

"There was a pile of firewood in the backyard," said Ypsilanti Fire Chief Jon Ichesco about what burned.

There was also an empty can of lighter fluid and a tiki torch had been knocked down and emptied of its fluid.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the backyard fire, Ichesco said. There was no significant damage.

Ichesco didn't want to go so far as to say it was arson, but did say he thought it was probably vandalism of some kind.

"The fire was suspicious," he said.
